Flowers of the Holy Land: Reflections on Resurrection and Rebirth

Kalamazoo, MI – March 13 to April 13, 2011

“Allow photography and the process of receiving and gazing upon… photos, to become a container for your internal awareness” — (Christine Valters Painter)

It is with these words in mind that I present these photographs from the Holy Land for your consideration and reflection. Taken in February 2004 during a pilgrimage to Israel, the flowers and natural scenes offer an opportunity for contemplation.

I invite you to look at these images with the “Eyes of the Heart”—to notice the colors, style, symbols, and details that emerge. Pay attention to what touches you deeply or where your eye is naturally drawn. Consider whether a symbol, color, or specific flower carries personal meaning, or if the place where the photograph was taken holds special significance for you. You might also reflect on areas in the image that feel less comfortable or familiar—what is there, and how might that discomfort speak to your daily life? As you engage with these photographs, consider what awareness or action God may be inviting you into through the quiet language of nature.
May these images guide you in your life’s journey.

“People from another planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us.” — (Iris Murdock)
